Art Therapy
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that combines the creative process and the unconscious mind. It aims to help individuals express themselves in nonverbal therapeutic methods, address psychological or emotional challenges, and work though traumatic experiences. Mediums such as (but not limited to) drawing, painting, sculpting, and poetry can be used, and are thoughtfully selected based on the emotional need during the session.
Art therapy can be helpful for those who are looking for an alternative to talk therapy, or who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. The art therapy process is not about creating a “good” art piece. Rather, it is the individual process that is the most important part of the therapeutic experience. Sessions are led by licensed professionals, trained to combine knowledge of psychotherapy and art to guide the process. The therapeutic process is different for everyone, and the unconscious mind is heavily relied on to measure what issues need to be addressed in the moment.
